What Gun Should I Get?
This is a question that is asked of me often. The answer is there is no one answer. Your personal defense is just that, personal. It is for you to decide. A few things to keep in mind when choosing a firearm are: 1. Do I like it. 2. Do I like to shoot it? 3. Is it the right size for comfort as well as function?
If you do not like the gun, the way it feels, the way it operates, the way it looks then keep looking. “Your gun” is out there. Many people come through my classes with guns they don’t like to shoot. More often than not it is because someone talked them into getting more gun than they can comfortably shoot or operate. Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t have “enough gun”. The best gun in the world is the one you have on you when you need one. There are many people that struggle hitting the target with a 9mm or a .38 revolver. I will put them on a .380 or a .22 and they are hitting the bullseye consistently. Their fundamentals are sound, they just don’t have a gun that is matched to them.
I caught myself today questioning another person’s choice for a concealed carry gun. He was looking at several guns that are mid-size rather than the small sub-compacts that are marketed as concealed carry guns. Then I realized I was doing it. Thinking about what would suit me rather than looking at what suited him. My friend is tall and thin with large hands. Smaller guns just are not comfortable for him to shoot. As far as concealability, I think he could conceal just about any gun if he dressed right. The gun he picked out was a mid-size .45. Not a gun I would have chosen but I could tell that he really liked it and would enjoy shooting it. That made it the best gun in the place…for him.
